I told Diamond Dave at the middle of the first quarter I did not like the way this was going. We were playing defense at a level I have never seen played before & I’m not kidding either, that first quarter defensive performance was just awe inspiring, but we never could get a big lead.

In other words we were playing as well as humanly possible at that point on the defensive end anyway and they were still within striking distance. That just never bodes well for us.

Look this isn’t rocket science it’s actually pretty simple really. We were crushed on the boards and on hustle plays and LeBron James put on a show the likes of which none of us have ever seen in a playoff game before.

There were some other issues which we will talk about but at the end of the day losing the boards and his majesty imposing his will on us was pretty much all she wrote.

Also let me just make this statement now, while James put on probably the single greatest individual game I’ve ever seen before (I’m trying to remember but right now I can’t think of a better overall game) the combination of them scoring 70 points while impressive is not the best I’ve ever seen. I was there when Reggie & Jalen combined for 80; however I can assure you that they did not combine for 27 rebounds so there is that.

Look there are several ways to look at this game. You could say that it took a superhero effort from both players to beat us, if you wanted to take away something positive & you would be right. Or you could say that if Darren Collison didn’t go a little crazy himself on the offensive end that we could have easily been blown out by 20 and you would also be right.

I love how the national media was already talking about how this game will be remembered as the defining moment in the big 3’s career. I’ll talk about the national media in a few minutes but first let me hit the grades & stuff on our team.

Before I get to grades I will ad that while I think that Vogel has been masterful for this entire season and playoff run he really irritated the crap out of me in this game.

I understand that foul trouble forced him to use players out of his normal rotations and all but again tonight he decided that he had to play the bench as unit in the first half and IMO he held Roy & West out for to long in the second half. Also I have no idea why he is giving Barbosa so many min. While I appreciate what he has given us this year I really become irritated when he is left in the game for 8-10 min. at a time when he is producing nothing on the offensive end. If he is hitting and is on then I can understand it but tonight I thought he was dreadful.

Let’s do grades.

Danny Granger: B How do you play 42 min. and not shoot a free throw? I’ll tell you how, shoot nothing but jumpers and a crap load of three point shots. Half of his field goal attempts were from behind the 3 point line and that just sickens me. I know he hit 4 of his 9 from distance but IMO that does nothing but allow LeBron to take it easy on defense. I said it before & I’ll say it again Danny is giving LeBron too much respect on the offensive end. Yes, he is a great defender but he is going to block every shot you take and there might be just an off shoot chance that you get an official to maybe call one your way once in awhile, that’s a long shot I know but worth trying IMO. I don’t blame Danny for LeBron scoring 40, he is the MVP after all, but I can’t help but think that if maybe Danny would you know like box out on occasion that maybe James would not have been able to get 18 rebounds which to me were equally as important as the 40 points he dropped on you.

David West: D I realize he got into foul trouble but honest to God he couldn’t post up Shane Battier? Really? Also Shane was intentionally messing with West in the second half trying to throw him off of his game & for the most part I think it worked. There was one sequence where there was a foul called and Battier reached out to knock the ball out of West hands and it caused a minor flare up by West. As Battier was walking away he had a wry smile on his face, kind of like Reggie would have back in the day when he was messing with Starks head. Not really one of David’s best games and he also did not grab nearly enough rebounds.

Roy Hibbert: B Certainly not the force he was the other night. The Heat just went back and were making it tough on Roy, they were hitting him quick on boxing out from rebounds and they were really working on denying the entry pass as they always do. Now Roy really needs to work on getting position better and he really has to work on fighting for position but overall it wasn’t a bad game from him. He rolled his ankle during the game & I thought I was going to be sick but he quickly recovered and didn’t seem to be suffering any lingering affects. Both he and West will have to be huge in the next game if we are to do anything.

Paul George: B- This is rough, he shot poorly from the field but he got to the line and hit all of his shots. He got burned several times by losing Wade on the defensive end yet had 3 steals & was the only wing defender to make any impact at all on the Heats 2 stars. He rebounded well but still let his man outrebound him. He did lead the team in assists so overall he had a decent game, just not a great game.

George Hill: D Ugh, not sure what happened here. He just shot terrible all night and overall I was not that happy with his defense on Chalmers although he did not have the game he had the other night. I have no idea how he has a positive +/- stat, he is the only Pacer to have that btw which is mind boggling considering I thought the team lost the lead when he was in during the 3rd.

Darren Collison: A If it weren’t for him this game would have been over in the 3rd and you are probably looking at a 20 blow out. His ability to get in the lane and create his own shot is almost more valuable than gold. Defensively he was just so-so but it’s hard to judge that seeing as how the ball was in James hand the entire time he was in the game. If nothing else Darren has really driven up his value during the playoffs and if we decide to not retain him I think he can be packaged with another asset and bring back a really nice player.

Tyler Hansbrough: C It started off so well. He drew some fouls, got to the line and hit his shots and then came the two idiotic traveling violations. What makes it worse is that if I remember right he made both attempts that were waved off. Between that and his lack of rebounding which I have just become accustomed to he made me want to sniff glue or something just to burn his game out of my memory.

Lou Amundson: C Every now and then Lou has this idea pop in his head that he is actually the re-incarnation of Hakeem Olajuwon and decides to do an up and under move to try and get a shot at the basket. This works great in his mind and then his body & actions immediately betray him and everybody realizes he is Lou Amundson. Today’s up & under move featured a forearm push off that would have made Barry Sanders proud. Other than that he gave you about what you expect from him.

Leandro Barbosa: D I just thought he was awful and I hate that Frank continued to play him big min. If he comes in and is hitting that is one thing but man his shot has pretty much already checked out on summer break. His defense was just ok which is enough that I’m not going to a lower grade for him.

Dahntay Jones: C Not in long enough to evaluate, which IMO is a mark against Frank as I much would have rather seen Dahntay today over Leandro.

Ok now some minor observations from the game.

When Granger & Wade got into their verbal spat I happened to look down in front of me and saw Dan Dakich sitting there and I swear to you that at that exact moment he was shaking his head and leaning to whoever was to his left saying “soft”. Now I’m assuming that he was referring to Wade but in this game it could have gone either way.

Speaking of which they showed Jeff Foster in the crowd tonight and I immediately missed him for a couple of reason. First Miami would not have won the battle of the boards most likely and two and IMO more important Jeff would have laid Wade out at least once and he certainly would have given James a hard foul going down the lane. Not once did we step up to them during this game and I think that this just empowered them to go harder & harder at the rim. I think if somebody would have put somebody on their *** even just once it could have changed the flow of the game.

I may have to give up reading twitter during the playoffs. I honest to God had no idea how smug and condescending the NBA beat writers are to any team that is not laden with the superstars. When the Heat began to make their run you could see the twitter verse just explode with joy and many of them pleasuring themselves over the re-birth of the Heat. It was as though the universe had been righted and the uppity team from Indiana was put in its place.

Look I get it, were not a sexy team. But for God’s sake wouldn’t it be in everybody’s best interest to at least pretend to be objective and maybe just maybe building up both teams instead of using one to tear down the other would be a good thing. The worst two actually work for the NBA itself, which is unbelievable.

Ok, we have a day to get ready. Frank is going to have to work on a few tweaks but overall the game plan is in place. Obviously we don’t want to lose the next one but if we do it’s still not the end of the world.

The series wasn’t over the other night when we beat them to take a 2-1 lead and it’s not over now that they have tied it up 2-2. Sure it will be tough winning in Miami again but at the end of the day we don’t have a choice we’re going to have to win one to keep this season going.

I’m not counting us out of this at all and not by a long shot. I am really looking at this as a fact that they had to have a super human game from James and an excellent game from Wade and they still didn’t beat us by double figures.

Just read this fantastic column by Ron Glover at The Starting Five and I had to post it. Just an excellent perspective on some of our problems with the media's reporting on sports today.

Quick note- Yes. This is about race. Pump the breaks a little. There's definitely a contingent whether small or large who will be angered by one more columnist pointing out problems we have in this country. If you understand that this isn't an assault on your character, but simply someone writing from a different perspective than yours than we can all probably learn something here. Try to understand. It will challenge you. I say that because this should be a fun and engaging discussion.

I think ESPN, though honestly it is probably entirely unintentional, does a horrible job reporting on African American athletes in almost every single circumstance. A great example as I've pointed out before, is how LBJ, the nicest guy ever is a villain, and Kevin I stomp peoples faces Love is an "angel."

:)
Diversity In Sports Media: Ron Glover’s View From The Back Row

African-American athletes make up for more than 66 percent of the players in the NFL and 82 percent of the players in the NBA. In 2006, a study conducted by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport showed 95 percent of sports editors, 87 percent of assistant sports editors, 90 percent of columnists and 87.5 percent of sports reporters were white. Of the 303 newspapers that participated in that study, only three African-American and four Latinos were sports editors. Among columnists only 19 were African-American, 3 Latino and 2 Asian. The numbers aren’t much higher for women – 5 percent editors, 13 percent assistant editors, 7 percent columnists and 10 percent reporters.

Not exactly sure how much the needle has moved either way in the years since that study, but judging from my view there’s reason to shout.

Anti- N*gger Machine

I found very early in the sports journalism game that not having a formal education is not as big an obstacle as being African American for advancing in the field. I’m good enough and smart enough - I’m just not sure if the establishment wants too many of my race in heavy rotation.

The majority of credentials issued to print media and “stand alone media”- which The Starting Five falls under – are white. Is this indicative of the population or more about perspective? More than enough media credentials exist to accommodate Philadelphia sports media for every game, every night. For reasons that have become obvious, writers at The Starting Five are asked to jump through special hoops. Hoops not existing for other affiliates - such as constantly following up with emails and phone calls just to make sure our requests didn’t slip through the cracks for that event. We have to be especially detailed in what we do because the slightest oversight could be a tripwire to being on the outside looking in. The lack of African-American journalists in locker rooms across the country denies writers like myself the ability to give the reader more than just what occurred in the game the previous night. When I’m sitting with a player minutes before he goes to work, I realize that he has a life. A life with real issues in the same real world that we all live in. An athlete having a bad day or not wanting to deal with a common media member can go from being unhappy with his contract to just being a jerk altogether. In the case of any African-American athlete, that speculation is tenfold.

If a white dominated press has shaped America’s view of the African-American athlete in a negative way for decades, it would seem African-American journalists would seek to change that perception by giving the public more than what is just commonly written. Instead those same common writers fear stirring the pot, and are just as happy to piggyback a story instead of digging beneath the surface as they well should.

And that is where many African-American sports writers in the position to make a difference have failed to give America an alternative view of the Black Athlete.
A priority should be placed on developing young African-American writing talent outside of what is done here at The Starting Five. Can’t just play the game, African-Americans have to write the game as well.

The credentialing power lies within the public relations structure of sports franchises - people who are in my opinion taught to adhere to a certain quota of non-white reporters regardless of the outlet. In my interaction with these individuals, their intentions are evident, “Put a lid on the pot before it boils over.” I’m sure that their pre-season briefings are hypothetically, “Remember, we can’t control who they put on the floor or in the stands, but our power lies in who we have talking to these guys (players) and the less that it looks like a North Philadelphia street corner, the better.”

For the most part PR representatives are about their work and could care less about who’s covering what. Naturally, there are a few who use their false sense of authority to put their bigotry on display in the most subtle of tones. It can come in the form of accommodating TSF for games during the season – the majority being games vs. teams lacking a superstar or an approval for one playoff game in a seven game series. Try swallowing that pill when a writer – African-American or white - is credentialed for the season, doesn’t show up until the playoffs and is still accommodated. It’s only because TSF is trying to break through that we roll with the punches. To these public relations folk, walking around with a non-laminated 3×5 card around your neck with name and affiliation scribbled with a Sharpie, is a privilege and we’d better take it with a smile or get to steppin’!

It becomes more frustrating when I’ve done my due diligence as a writer only to have to knock a little harder and longer the next time out. Working twice as hard as the next guy because I’m from a stand alone site focusing on the African-American athlete is a given, and that is the story of most of our African-American lives. I would like just as much attention paid to me for reasons to keep inviting me back as they have reasons for wanting to keep me out. Coverage of a game usually begins after leaving my 9 to 5. I’m usually one of the first from the media showing up at the arena, first in the visitor’s locker room and one of the first with an inquiry in the post game presser. I remember the first time I asked a question in a press conference and I noticed heads turning because it was someone other than who they would’ve expected asking a question and it wasn’t nothing slow pitch softball. That was a great feeling because the elephant in the room had just stood up. And while none of those writers felt threatened by my presence, I viewed each one of them as a measuring stick and a soon to be a notch on my belt each time their pens touched paper after I made an inquiry to a coach or player. That was my victory and validation that I was in the right place.

One benefit I never paid much attention to was actually building a professional relationship with some of the players. Sometimes I’m greeted openly in the form some dap and a shoulder hug instead of eyes rolling skyward and a player dipping into the training room when I show up. Quite naturally, some white reporters give the scene that it must be a Black thing expression, while the PR representative wanting to keep me out is seething inside.

“False media, we don’t need do we?“

There’s no doubt African-American athletes would welcome more Black press into the locker rooms. Someone they relate to in ways that a white reporter would not understand (this is a Black thing). Could a white reporter relate to Allen Iverson about walking through sewage-filled floors before becoming a generational icon in the NBA? I doubt it. For the greater part of his career, the only thing reporters seemed to worry about was the number of practices Iverson brushed off in a week, or which Philly club he and his entourage…I mean posse occupied the night before. Should any writer worth his/her salt feel comfortable writing a story that they have trouble understanding on any level? Yes, they should. The Struggle is the calling card of today’s African-American athlete no matter how they’re viewed by the rest of the world. The majority of those covering them have no clue of any struggle and are not about that life. If reading ten stories about Iverson’s upbringing, nine will sound the same, while the one with the most passion and sensibility never makes it to print.

Why did we find out nearly a year later that Terrelle Pryor signed Ohio State memorabilia for money to keep his mother and sister off the street? African-American and also white journalists lambasted Pryor for bringing down the Ohio State program. Pryor was also seen as costing Jim Tressel his job but it was Tressel who was oblivious to the actions of his star player and African-American journalists failed to dig deeper in getting to the root of Pryor’s dilemma. So what happens? A young man’s reputation is ruined and he’s left to pick up the pieces and continue on his own the best way he knows how – falling back on those same survival skills that cost him his collegiate career. Where white reporters see the cars, expensive clothes and jewelry and think Pryor is in it for himself, African-Americans who aren’t journalists have the instinct to look one layer beneath the surface and see that there is a 90 percent chance that this kid is sending money home. He is sending money home to keep a younger brother from falling victim to the streets or a baby sister from running with the wrong guy.

The relationship between African-American athletes and white reporters is awkward at best and at the end of the day that player is reluctantly emptying his soul to someone whose color represents the root of his struggles. Hypothetically he may say to himself: “A white man fired my dad to hire another white man and because of that a white man cut our lights off. My white coach took me in only because I could dunk a ball like no one else and wants to cash in later. Now this white reporter wants me to give him a lily-white story of my struggles so he can make some green to feed his white family.” It’s hard to build any sense of real trust when every door that was closed in your life was at the end of a white hand.

It’s equates being at Augusta National on Masters weekend, having five minutes with (name white golfer here) and that conversation last all of 15 seconds. Reason: there is no common ground between that golfer and myself. Color plays a role but it isn’t the sole reason. His first thought is hypothetically, “What does he know about golf?” I can’t relate to the that golfer being a child of privilege. Nowhere in our timelines can we ever relate to one another on a socio-economic plane, so in his conscience I’m already inferior to him and his way of life. Being on the grounds of Augusta where I’m welcomed reluctantly even as a journalist solidifies his feeling.

If professional sports incorporates a plantation philosophy, then the American sports media is the last line of defense between the African-American athlete and the level playing field non-existent since our arrival on slave ships to America.

The lack of diversity in the press rooms and locker rooms around the country is a simple game of divide and conquer. As long as there are people in the press seeking to reinforce stereotypes about African-American athletes as opposed to a respectable percentage that mirrors the African-American presence in sports, it only highlights the problem. Black athletes will continue to be conditioned to the white hand at the end of every microphone or recorder which becomes a whip of recorded words held against him if he/she chooses to get out of line.

That playing field will be hard to come by as long as the majority of reports and columns read have the same opinion and bias. If there’s only one side to the story, how can an intelligent opinion develop? It’s almost conditioning the reader to not think for themselves or outside of the box they’ve become accustomed to. So, when it comes down to an opinion of an African-American athlete, he’s already stereotyped and placed in the all too familiar categories: pampered, selfish, childish and troubled with an attitude problem before the story hits the web or your newsstand.

My goal as a writer is to continue to seek the good in every athlete (and scrutinize when needed), instead of mimicking the lazy and all too tired narrative seeking to disparage the African-American athlete first and ask the right questions later. The reputation and image of the African-American athlete is of the utmost importance because it has been misunderstood, misconstrued and mismanaged from Jack Johnson through LeBron James.

Lastly, I'd like to give a quick example of how the white sports media really distorts our perspective on sports. On this board in particular, as I've been one of the leaders on the bring-Deron-to-Indy bandwagon, some may remember thread after thread where I had to preach about Deron Williams character. The media almost instantly painted Deron Williams as egotistical, self centered, uncoachable, and almost entirely money oriented. The problem was, there was no evidence to back up that sort of reasoning.

The way the media reports on athletes today, whether intentional or not, does not give athletes a fair shake. (LBJ is probably the most blatant example).

Anywho, hoped you enjoyed the read.

This is the guess the points thread for the Pacer game at the Miami Heat on 05/22/12

Game time is 7:00 PM

See The Guess the Score FAQ for the full contest rules, winners, and statistics. However here is the short version:

The difference between your picks for each team and their real score is added together. That is your "off by". Lowest wins. You pick Pacers 90 Knicks 80. The real score is Knicks 95 Pacers 81. You are off by 24. (90-81) + (95-80).

RoboDoug is a computer program. He can only understand your guesses if they are in a certain format. See the FAQ for details.

Winner gets his name listed in the winners list. That's it.

Preseason wins do not count toward your season total.

This thread will be closed to further guesses at approximately 15 minutes before game time.

Good luck.
I'm not losing hope though - just was rough having our bigs in foul trouble again.

The Heat certainly looked fresh today as they didn't mind attacking the rim throughout the whole game - LeBron did not have to play PF today so he didn't get worn out banging with D. West, who was just way off the whole game today.

NBA: Bob Finnan's three points and rumor mill
Published: Saturday, May 19, 2012

-- There was some talk about Hornets shooting guard Eric Gordon getting a max offer this summer, possibly from Indiana. That might be far-fetched because he's had issues with his knees for two consecutive years. Don't rule out a possible sign-and-trade, however, with Gordon going to the Pacers and forward Danny Granger going to New Orleans. Both teams are under the cap this summer. In that scenario, the Pacers could move Paul George to small forward, which might be his natural position.

-- The Dallas Mavericks signed Coach Rick Carlisle to a four-year extension. They are expected to come after Nets point guard Deron Williams in free agency. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the most the Mavs can offer Williams is a four-year, $81 million contract. The Nets can offer him a five-year, $109 million deal.

-- Lakers center Andrew Bynum has lost $460,000 in fines and salary from suspensions this season, according to the Los Angeles Times. His recent infraction was being fined $15,000 by the NBA for blowing off an interview session.

Jared Wade: Defending the Heat’s Pick-and-Roll and Flummoxing Dwyane Wade

I’m not sure when the pick-and-roll was invented, but it was probably about three weeks
after James Naismith hung a peach basket on a pole. It is among the most basic
offensive actions a team can run and it has been a staple play of virtually every NBA
team since the days of Bob Cousy. The reason: if run properly, it inevitably creates an
advantage, at least temporarily, for the offense.

There are many ways to defend the pick-and-roll. None of them work. Again, the offense
always gets an advantage and while different defensive strategies can limit that edge in
various ways, vulnerabilities remain. So the goal for the two defenders involved in the
play is to react to the screen and then recover quickly enough to ensure that both
offensive players are corralled into areas where they can do the least damage.

In recent years, the prevailing defensive philosophy used against the pick-and-roll has
been to blitz the ball handler and force him to give the ball up. I can’t say exactly when
or why this became the norm, but it probably has to do with players like LeBron James,
Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook being so adept at going by big men
in zero second flat and splitting any soft double teams. Players in the 1980s weren’t
doing it like they can.

Regardless of why, things done changed.

Tom Thibodeau is the leader of the new school. As an assistant in Boston and now as a
head coach in Chicago, he has implemented this “swarm the pick-and-roll” strategy to
help his teams play some of the best defense the sport has ever seen. It is the anti-
thesis of passively reacting to what the offensive team wants to accomplish in the pick-
and-roll. The defense becomes the aggressor, swarming the man with the ball and
rotating help defenders to stop the roll man from catching a pass and scoring at the rim.

Throughout the first three games on their series against the Heat, the Pacers have not
been doing this. They have instead done the exact opposite.

As the ball-handler (usually LeBron or Wade and sometimes Mario Chalmers) comes off
the screen, the big man does not run at him hard. He is barely even showing at all
actually. He is just hanging back and maintaining a pool-cue-length distance in between
himself and the guy with the ball.

This accomplishes two things that fundamentally alter how the rest of the play will likely
transpire. First, it makes it much harder for the ball-handler — no matter how fast and
crafty he is as a penetrator — from getting all the way to the rim. The big man hanging
back is essentially adopting a free safety mentality in which he won’t allow anyone to get
past him. Of course, the penetrator can just try to go over or around, but especially when
the defender is Roy Hibbert … good luck with that. He is 7’2″ and has been in a shot-
blocking zone for weeks now.

The other key difference with this strategy...CONTINUE READING AT 8p9s

3-on-3 preview: Heat-Pacers, Game 4

In another installment of the Heat Index's 3-on-3 series, our writers give their takes
on the storylines before Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals (ABC, 3:30 ET).

1. Fact or Fiction: LeBron is right, Game 4 is a must-win for the Heat.

Tom Haberstroh: Fiction. The "must-win" meme is the worst thing to happen in
sports analysis since the basketball adaptation of the "closer" term. That may be a bit
strong, but our casual acceptance that a non-elimination game is a "must-win" has
gotten a bit out of control. If the Heat lose Sunday, they still have potentially two
games remaining at home. This isn't do-or-die. Yet.

Michael Wallace: Fiction. I know the point LeBron was trying to make, but I think
in a literal fashion, when it comes to this situation, it's not true. Elimination games are
must-win games. Neither team's season would end based on the outcome of Game 4. I
actually believe this game is bigger for the Pacers' psyche. The Heat can't go in thinking
this series is over if they don't win Sunday. Even if they're down 3-1, there's still a
game in Miami on Tuesday. Which means there's still a chance to start a rally.

Brian Windhorst: Fact. I think it is rather obvious that getting down 3-1 without
Chris Bosh and with the Pacers getting more confident by the minute is not a recipe for
victory. The difference between 3-1 and 2-2 obviously is vast, especially because it
would give the Heat back the home-court advantage. The Heat players have a lot on the
line here: reputations and futures and legacies. Way more than the Pacers.

2. Fact or Fiction: D-Wade came off worse than Spoelstra in Game 3.

Haberstroh: Fact. And that's a remarkable achievement by Wade considering that
Heat fans were calling for Spoelstra's pink slip after the Pacers went up 7-0 during the
Dexter Pittman Experiment of Game 3. And then sprinkle in the fact that Spoelstra had a
heated argument with the team's most beloved star. And still, there's no question that
Wade came off worse in Game 3. That's how awful Wade was in Thursday's game.

Wallace: Fact. I asked Dwyane on Saturday if he felt he made a mistake by
showing his frustrations in such a public fashion during that timeout blowup with
Spoelstra. He said it was just the byproduct of a heated discussion during an intense
time in the game. At the end of the day, I truly believe Dwyane was much madder with
himself than anyone on that Heat bench. His body just wasn't cooperating. He lashed
out. He looked bad doing it. Everyone insists it's behind them now.

Windhorst: Fact. Spoelstra's Dexter Pittman experience and revolving door of
subs was not exactly awe-inspiring. But Wade came off as petulant because of the way
he was playing, especially his hard-to-explain effort level. Combined with his inexcusable
flagrant foul in Game 2, Wade's attitude so far in this series has been has been poor.
Including snapping at his coach at a crucial part of the game.

3. Fact or Fiction: The Heat should still be favored in this series.

Haberstroh: Fiction. In light of the Wade injury stuff, I've moved from toss-up to
slight nod to the Pacers. I still think the Heat have a good chance of turning this around
and beating the Pacers, but I don't find it to be a likely scenario anymore. Not with Bosh
out. Not with Wade playing on one leg. I don't think this is an X's-and-O's problem as
much as it is a physical one. Does Wade still have the burst in his step to be himself?
I'm not sure. If he doesn't, it becomes a 1.5-on-8 ordeal.

Wallace: Fiction. Call me crazy, but I consider it a 50-50 series right now. Yes,
the Pacers have a 2-1 series lead. But I've seen the Heat rally from a 2-0 deficit in the
Finals to beat Dallas in 2006. And I've seen Miami hold a 2-1 series lead over the Mavs
last season in the Finals and squander it. I've always said the Heat seem to respond to
adversity far better than prosperity. But without Chris Bosh available and with Wade
ailing a bit, nothing less than their A-game will beat Indy.

Windhorst: Fact. If they split in Indiana, which is still possible, then they will
have done exactly what was expected of them and they will have control of the series.
Because this is still within reach, they are not yet desperate. They lose Game 4, of
course, then they become a heavy underdog. In short, it's a big game.

Eric Maroun: How Indiana Got Its Swagger Back

So that happened, huh?

I’d like to congratulate the Indiana Pacers on stealing a road playoff game against
one of the best home teams in the NBA. It wasn’t pretty by any means and it seemed
like both teams were giving the game away throughout the final couple minutes.
However, a win is a win in the playoffs and even the poor play by Indiana down the
stretch doesn’t change the fact that the series is now evened up at one game apiece.

Prior to Game3 of the Pacers-Heat series, my friend John who came to the game
with me asked who I thought would win. My political answer was either Indiana close
or Miami big. I simply did not see Miami winning a close game on the road, and I
certainlycould not fathom a reality where Indiana blew out the Heat. A little over
three hours after John asked me for my prediction, the Pacers had routed the Heat
94-75, and all of the sudden they find themselves up 2-1 in this series.

Some random thoughts from the game:

Coming from someone who wrote an article months ago calling out the entire
city of Indianapolis for not showing up to games and finishing with the fifth
worst attendance in the NBA, the crowd last night absolutely brought it. The
18,165 fans in attendance clad in yellow “Gold Swagger” shirts served as the
poster child for the image the country should have when they think of Indiana
as a basketball state. From the very beginning, it was apparent to everyone,
fans and beat writers included, that this was going to be a playoff atmosphere.

Roy Hibbert was an absolute monster. When Dexter Pittman was announced
as a starter, the gentleman sitting next to me, decked out in a white and black
LeBron jersey, declared the game was over and Hibbert was going to have a
big game. While the decision to start Pittman, a guy who had exactly zero
meaningful playoff minutes logged in his career coming into last night, was
curious, to declare even facetiously that the game was over before it started
was laughable. Three minutes later, the Pittman experiment was over, Indiana
was up 11-2, and I had stopped laughing. Hibbert’s final line ended up
resembling everything that Pacers fans could possibly want from their All-Star
center: 19 points, 18 rebounds, 5 blocks, and most likely one massive pay day
coming his way in the near future.

Where do I even possibly begin with Dwyane Wade? The jokes have already
been made that he’s in the spirit of the Indianapolis 500 by bringing the
Brickyard to Banker’s Life Fieldhouse last night and how it was actually Miami
fans, not Indiana fans, who now wish he had been suspended for Game 3. But
there is something far more serious going on than his woeful five point, six
turnover, 2-13 from the field performance. Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star
tweeted at halftime that Wade might be sick while Brian Windhorst reports that
Wade is being bothered by a lower leg issue that plagued him towards the end
of the regular season. Whatever the issue is, it needs to get resolved as soon
as possible because LeBron James simply cannot carry this team on his back
at this point...READ MORE AT HARDWOOD PAROXYSM
